Outdoor Shots with ExpoImaging

When you're shooting outdoors, it's extremely important to be prepared for changing weather conditions. Most of the time, you plan everything for a sunny outdoor shot, but when the weather changes suddenly, a grey, overcast sky can make the subject you're aiming for impossible. Conversely, when the weather is very bright, you need to be able to tone down the light accordingly for the shots.

With the help of ExpoImaging's extensive range of flash shapers, gels and other accessories, you can now expand your creative horizons in the field of flash photography on the go in many ways.

Create artificial sunlight thanks to ExpoImaging Flash Gels

It's always difficult to predict how bright or sunny the weather will be, but Rogue Flash Gels are a great solution to have on hand even when you're out and about. For example, using the orange, warm-toned gel on your flash will allow you to create a realistic sunlight effect. Positioned in the right place, your flash can replicate the warm glow normally associated with a low sun.

By experimenting with different colored Rogue Flash Gels and the positioning of your flash unit, you can even simulate a sunrise or sunset. Rogue Flash Gels are great for experimenting with landscape photography. For example, using a green gel will enhance the color of pink and purple flowers in a field and make them stand out in the image. The joy and benefit of Rogue Flash Gels is that you can experiment with different colors, subjects, locations and lighting conditions.

Modify your light with the FlashBender

Shooting outdoors typically creates harsh cast shadows. Using a FlashBender allows you to soften this light to create a shot that has a much more natural result. As with all ExpoImaging products, you can take advantage of this versatility and experiment until you capture the image that is perfect for you.

Photographer Tim Engle is a great example of how you can easily create soft light with the Rogue Flash XL Pro Kit that still looks incredibly natural. Make sure that the direct, harsh light from the sun, or when using the reflector, does not create any hard edges on the face or even cast shadows.

sunlight balance

Unfortunately, if the weather is brighter than you expected, you will end up with washed-out images and dark shadows in the eye sockets. To get rid of washed-out images, you can correct your camera's white balance using tools such as the ExpoDisc . This white balance filter is a handy tool that ensures that your subjects' skin tone looks natural and not washed out or discolored.

The ExpoDisc is a simple, very effective tool that can save you a lot of time when editing your photos, as the filter “calibrates” your camera’s color for the entire shoot, whether you are shooting outdoors or in the studio.

Versatile and portable flash accessories

Earlier this year , ExpoImaging introduced an improved version of the Flashbender, the v3 reflector and softbox kits , which accommodate a wider range of flash units of different shapes and sizes. Each FlashBender v3 is lightweight and portable, and can be easily folded up so it can be conveniently stored in your camera bag. This makes it much easier to carry flash reflectors around without having to worry about lugging heavy flash equipment.

Take the opportunity to get outside this summer and see what wonderful images you can capture by experimenting with ExpoImaging's flash and camera accessories!
