Discover the ExpoDisc Professional White Balance Filter

One tool we always have in our camera bag but don't talk about much is the handy ExpoDisc from Rogue (ExpoImaging). So we'd like to shed some light on the matter and explain why this little tool deserves a place in your camera bag.

What is an ExpoDisc used for?

First of all, you need to know that the ExpoDisc is used to manually adjust white balance and exposure, similar to a gray card or a ColorChecker. It looks like a regular filter, but has a diffuser for fluorescent light on one side.

How to use an ExpoDisc?

Unlike a gray card or color checker, which require you to take an image before you start shooting, the ExpoDisc doesn't require you to take a photo. Instead, you simply attach the ExpoDisc to your lens and take a custom white balance image in-camera. Then you can start shooting. Simply point the camera and go. This is one of the main advantages of the ExpoDisc, as it measures the ambient light and can therefore compensate for light coming in from all angles.

How do I attach the ExpoDisc to my camera?

The ExpoDisc is available in 77mm and 82mm sizes. Unlike other filters, you don't have to screw the ExpoDisc on or off. It's designed to be pushed into the filter thread of your camera or simply cover the front of the lens. It's quick and easy to put on and take off and is much more durable than traditional filters, so you can just throw it in your camera bag or stick it in your pocket. It's also well made so it will still work perfectly even if it gets a little scratched or dirty.

Can I use the ExpoDisc with my camera?

The ExpoDisc can be used with any digital camera that has a custom white balance feature, including all digital SLRs and most compact cameras. The ExpoDisc is compatible with all major camera brands including Canon, Nikon, Sony, Fuji, Pentax, Olympus, Samsung, Lumix and Leica.

Which white balance is the best?

In the world of photography, there are different opinions about which approach is best. Some prefer to use automatic white balance, others correct it later in post-production, others prefer to use a gray card. Our approach is simple: use the right tools so you can spend more time doing the things you enjoy.

Using the ExpoDisc will save you hours of tedious editing to achieve the perfect white balance, even in varying lighting conditions. You'll get consistent, accurate results time and time again, and your photo shoots will be more efficient.
