Calibrite ColorChecker White Balance

White balance control for photos and videos - from shooting to editing

The ColorChecker White Balance Card is spectrally neutral and delivers accurate white reproduction for both photo and video workflows. Use this target for custom in-camera white balance to ensure accurate, consistent, and neutral whites in all lighting conditions. Ideal for photographers and filmmakers.

The ColorChecker White Balance Card is a large format version of the white balance target included in both ColorChecker Passport products. The actual color of the target is a light gray, as this provides the best white balance result.

This enables them to:

  • to eliminate color casts
  • Improve the color preview on the camera display so that your histograms are more reliable
  • Color editing in post-production becomes faster and easier because you no longer have to neutralize each image individually.

The ColorChecker White Balance Target delivers accurate white reproduction. When lighting conditions change, your camera changes the way it renders white, which can cause color shifts in your photos or video footage. Most white balance targets are not color neutral and can cause color shifts in different lighting conditions. The ColorChecker White Balance Target, on the other hand, is a scientifically designed, completely neutral white reference that prevents color shifts and delivers a precise, uniform surface that is also spectrally neutral - in all lighting conditions. This means you can be confident that the image or footage you capture is as real as possible.

The ColorChecker White Balance Target allows you to adjust the color sensitivity of your digital camera to exactly match the lighting conditions, meaning that the camera "sees" the color. The perceived color of white changes depending on the environmental conditions - outdoors it is perceived as cooler, indoors as warmer, and under fluorescent lighting as greener. Even in a controlled studio environment this can be a problem. Whether on location or in your studio, determining a precise custom white balance before each photo or video shoot ensures correct colors from the start.

Creating a custom white balance for each lighting situation ensures that the preview images on the built-in camera display are color corrected, your histograms are more reliable, and color editing in post-production is faster. Raw shots with the target can be taken at any time during the shoot. In a JPEG workflow, the first shot should always be taken with the white balance target.

Why can't I just use any white object for white balance?

White balancing with a regular piece of paper or other white/grayish object seems like a simple solution, but most objects are not neutral in all lighting conditions, let alone uniform. Inaccurate white balance will result in color casts and a lack of consistency between exposure conditions, making color correction extremely time-consuming.
