support for third-party software
ColorChecker Passport Photo 2 is an indispensable tool that helps you perfectly capture the colors of the world and ensures that you work with the most accurate image possible from capture to editing.
The art of color management is about making sure your colors are consistent from capture to output. This means your camera captures true colors, your monitor reproduces them accurately, and your printer produces a photo that matches what you see on the screen.
The ColorChecker Passport Photo 2 is an essential component for your color management workflow. It includes 4 targets that give you everything you need for exposure control, white balance, camera profiling, and creative enhancements, wherever your creativity takes you.
gray balance target
18% gray is the industry standard reference used to achieve consistent image exposure and/or color when shooting film or still images. Use this with a reflection light meter or your in-camera light meter to check exposure ratios and light distribution. It can also be used for neutral balancing and to remove color casts.
White Balance Target
Accurate white balance ensures that the colors captured are true and provides a reference point for editing. This target is created to exacting standards to be spectrally neutral and reflect light evenly across the visible spectrum. This provides a neutral reference point that can be used to accurately compensate for different lighting conditions.
A notice:
Raw photographers can capture this target at any point during the shoot. JPEG photographers should capture it on the first shot.
Why can't I just use any white object for white balance?
White balancing with a regular piece of paper or other white/grayish object seems like a simple solution, but most objects are not neutral and certainly not uniform under all lighting conditions.
Inaccurate white balance results in color casts and a lack of consistency between exposure conditions, making color correction extremely time-consuming.
This can slow down your post-processing as you try to correct the resulting color casts.
Classic Target
Shooting with the industry standard ColorChecker Classic is an important step in achieving consistent and predictable color when shooting. Combined with Camera Calibration Software, you can create custom DNG and/or ICC profiles for your camera based on scene lighting to ensure consistent, predictable and repeatable results from frame to frame and camera to camera.
The Classic Target also provides a visual color reference point so you can see exactly how color corrections will affect the rest of your colors before you apply them. Each of the 24 color patches represents the colors of natural objects, such as sky blues, skin tones, and leaf greens; and each patch reflects light exactly as its real-world counterpart does. Each patch is individually colored with a solid color to produce pure, flat, rich color with no patches or mixed tones.
The ColorChecker Classic Target is supported by the following third-party software solutions:
The Creative Optimization Target adds a higher level of color creativity and control to your workflow. It contains four rows of color swatches specifically designed for image editing that can be applied instantly with a click of the eyedropper.
Two rows of warming and cooling color swatches in the center serve as a creative guide to create pleasing and repeatable edits. Creatively refine the colors of your image by warming skin tones or enhancing deep greens or blues in a landscape. Simply click on your selection and sync it with other images taken under the same conditions to create pleasing edits - it's easy!
A series of clipping boxes at the bottom provide a visual reference for assessing, checking and editing images for shadow detail or highlight clipping. The clipping boxes are divided into two groups: light and dark. Each box represents a difference of 1/3 stop, except for the last black box. The exposure difference between the darkest box and the next is about 1/10 stop, and the dynamic range of the target is about 32:1 (5 stops).
The upper HSL (Hue, Saturation, Lightness) range includes 8 spectral fields to ensure color fidelity across all hues, allowing you to evaluate and correct any color shifts.
Camera Calibration Software
Create custom DNG and/or ICC camera profiles using the industry standard ColorChecker Classic (with 24 color patches) or ColorChecker Digital SG, together with the standalone ColorChecker Camera Calibration software or the Adobe Lightroom® plug-in.
This advanced camera profiling technology delivers excellent results with both reference targets and creates profiles that work well in virtually any lighting condition. Automatic target detection finds the target on its own and makes profiling a breeze. Whether you're shooting with a single camera or multiple cameras, color perfectionists can easily create an accurate color base and stay in control of their colors.
Dual-Illuminant DNG Profile
A dual illuminant profile combines images taken under two different light sources into a single profile that can be applied to an even wider variety of lighting conditions. Dual illuminant profiles can be created using any two of twenty-one supported light sources, providing the freedom to switch between most lighting conditions without having to change profiles.
Passport protective cover
The ColorChecker Passport Photo 2 is designed for absolute convenience and portability so you can take it with you to every shoot. The pocket-sized Passport is made of a durable plastic material that protects the four targets and extends their lifespan.
The Passport can be adjusted to different positions so that you can place the targets exactly where you need them. The included lanyard ensures that the Passport is always within reach during every photo shoot.
