How do I choose the size of a monitor?

Bigger is better, right? By and large, yes, but it all depends on your specific workflow. Let us explain: Our monitors range from 19 inches to 38 inches, measured diagonally across the screen. If you have limited space in your work environment, there is a limit to the size of monitor you want in that space. You should also consider the type of work you produce. It's easier to work on a design when you can see it in a realistic frame of reference. If you're working on large-scale illustrations, architectural drawings, or in cinema, a larger screen is definitely an advantage. This is also useful when working with large format printers, so that what you see on the screen matches what you see when printed.

After choosing a screen size, you should also choose a resolution - this decision is important when working in certain design applications because it allows you to work in specific formats.

monitor resolution

Monitor resolution is how many pixels your screen is made up of horizontally and vertically. Images on the screen are made up of these tiny pixels, so the more pixels an image has, the clearer and more detailed the image is. Within the design world, this is crucial! Advances in display technology mean that screen size and resolution are always increasing with new display models.

SD = Standard Definition - 720 x 480 pixels, the original standard for digital TVs and displays, now obsolete due to advances in display technology.

HD = High Definition - 1,280 x 720 pixel resolution.

FHD = Full High Definition (Full HD) - 1,920 x 1,080 resolution.

QHD = Quad HD 2560 x 1440 pixel resolution, also known as 2K.

UHD = Ultra High Definition 3,840 x 2,160 pixel resolution, also known as 4K, required for television video production.

4K DCI = 4K (Digital Cinema Initiatives) 4096 × 2160 resolution, required for cinema video production.

What is your workflow?

HD, Full HD, QHD and Ultra HD are suitable for photographers and designers of all disciplines, but the higher the resolution, the more detail you'll see on the screen - so choose wisely! If you work with video, however, you really need to upgrade to a UHD or 4K DCI monitor, depending on whether you're in video or cinema production. These monitors can reproduce images and movies at the same resolution as standard TVs and work with video editing and production programs that require that resolution.
